Butter

Butter was a Toronto app that pulled all of a household's subscriptions — streaming, meal kits, gyms, memberships — into one place so you could see what you had and what it cost, and paid members 1% cash back on their subscription spending. It demoed at TechTO in April 2018.

No longer operating — justbutterit.ca does not resolve and butter.link now redirects to a parked lander (both checked 2026-09-08). Two searches for an acquisition returned nothing — only unrelated companies also called Butter, including a US payments company founded in 2020 and a Melbourne social app. No closing date is claimed here.

About

Butter was built for what its team called the subscription revolution: people buying access rather than ownership, and losing track of how many monthly charges they were carrying. The app collected a member's subscriptions and memberships in one view — the pitch named Netflix, Spotify, Costco, HelloFresh, Chefs Plate and ClassPass — showed what each cost, paid 1% cash back on subscription spending, and recommended new subscriptions to try. Two of the team, introduced in TechTO's own description as Kevin and Vinny, demoed it at TechTO in April 2018, days after a Toronto ice storm stranded their CTO in New York; the product was in beta at the time and the company pointed the room at butter.link/TechTO. The service later closed. Its site, justbutterit.ca, ended with a goodbye notice, and neither that domain nor butter.link serves the product now.
