CAE was founded on Saint Patrick's Day 1947 by ex-Royal Canadian Air Force officer Ken Patrick, in a vacant hangar at Saint-Hubert Airport near Montreal, with 18 employees. It is now a public company running about 240 sites and training locations across more than 40 countries, split between Civil Aviation and Defense & Security. Chief Digital Officer Arnaud Van de Voorde represented CAE on TechTO Talent in January 2022 and on the Three Comma Club podcast that August. On that second appearance he put the company at 35 countries, 190 locations and 13,000 people, roughly half of them engineers, and made the case that staying headquartered in Montreal had been an advantage — Canadian infrastructure, talent and government partnership, plus a billion dollars CAE committed in 2020 to five years of Canadian R&D. He was also blunt about the limits of hype in a regulated industry: technology in aviation or medicine cannot ship on a three-week sprint, and CAE, he said with 'a little bit of a smug Canadian look', had been in the metaverse for fifteen years. In fiscal 2026, ended 31 March 2026, CAE reported $4.9 billion of revenue and a $19.3 billion adjusted backlog alongside a transformation plan targeting $125-150 million of annual run-rate savings by fiscal 2030.
