Danby was not founded by Jim Estill — it dates to 1947 and was family-owned long before him. Estill sat on its board, took over as interim CEO in 2015 when the previous CEO resigned, and then bought it outright: 'They said they wanted to sell the business. I said, How much for? And they told me, so I said, Fine, I'll take it,' he told the TechTO stage in November 2019. He told that same audience Danby does about $400 million in sales and makes roughly 2 million appliances a year, with its head office in Guelph and factories mostly in North America. Also on that stage he introduced Parcel Guard, a smart mailbox built to counter porch theft, reframing Danby's business from appliances to 'big boxes' — it is made in Cobourg, Ontario out of structural foam plastic. Estill remains CEO: he appeared before the House of Commons industry committee in November 2025 as 'Chief Executive Officer, Danby', telling it that 'Danby has operations in the U.S. as well as Canada, but we are a Canadian company.'
