About
Dentons is a global law firm. It was created on 28 March 2013 when SNR Denton (US and UK), Fraser Milner Casgrain (Canada) and Salans (France) combined, and it grew again in November 2015 by joining with the Chinese firm Dacheng. In August 2023 Dentons separated from Dacheng, citing Chinese rules on cybersecurity and data protection; Dacheng now operates independently as Beijing Dacheng Law Offices. Dentons still describes itself as the world's largest global law firm, and it has no single headquarters — it is a network of member firms and affiliates. Its Canadian firm is the former Fraser Milner Casgrain, one of the three firms that created Dentons in the first place.
Dentons appears in the TechTO archive through a panel, not a company talk. At the May 2018 HealthTO special edition on medical cannabis, Eric Foster — then a partner and leader of the Dentons Canada cannabis practice — opened and moderated the session, introducing the firm's cannabis practice and its cross-border work before handing over to the other panellists, who included Microsoft Canada's startup lead and the founder of a cannabis business accelerator. The discussion covered the regulatory load on the sector, how fast the rules were changing ahead of legalisation, and where innovation might come from. Foster left Dentons for Mintz in 2023.
Backers

Quick answers
Did Dentons give a TechTO talk?
No. Dentons is in the archive because Eric Foster, then leader of its Canadian cannabis practice, hosted and moderated the HealthTO medical cannabis panel in May 2018. He introduced the firm on stage; the session itself was a panel discussion with other companies.
What is Dentons and when was it formed?
A global law firm, created on 28 March 2013 by the merger of SNR Denton, Canada's Fraser Milner Casgrain and France's Salans. It combined with the Chinese firm Dacheng in 2015 and separated from it in August 2023.
What is the Canadian connection?
Fraser Milner Casgrain, one of the three firms that formed Dentons in 2013, was Canadian, and its successor is Dentons' Canadian firm. Eric Foster led its cannabis practice at the time of the 2018 panel; he moved to Mintz in 2023.
