About

Drift built chat, chatbots and conversational AI for B2B companies, on the argument that buyers should be able to talk to a vendor immediately rather than fill in a form and wait. David Cancel co-founded it with Elias Torres after selling Performable to HubSpot and serving as HubSpot's chief product officer. On the TechTO SalesTO stage in October 2017 Cancel described arriving at the idea of a conversation qualified lead, having repeated a mistake he had made before by not hiring a sales rep from day one. The company raised roughly $107M from CRV, General Catalyst, Sequoia and others before Vista Equity Partners took a majority stake in September 2021 at a valuation above $1B. Cancel became executive chairman in June 2022 and Salesloft acquired Drift in February 2024.

Backers

CRV, General Catalyst, NextView Ventures, Founder Collective and Sequoia Capital backed the company before Vista Equity Partners took a majority stake in September 2021.

Quick answers

What happened to Drift?

Salesloft acquired it in February 2024 on undisclosed terms, after Vista Equity Partners had taken a majority stake in September 2021. Drift.com now redirects to Salesloft.

What is a conversation qualified lead?

Drift's alternative to the marketing qualified lead. Cancel's point on the TechTO stage was that enterprise buyers want to talk to someone about a specific question rather than linger on a blog and fill in white paper forms, so the conversation itself is the qualifying signal.
