About
Geordie Rose co-founded D-Wave, the first quantum computing company, then Kindred and then Sanctuary AI. Snowdrop is the one he built to stay small. Its own site says nothing more than that Snowdrop builds software for quantum computers, and the point of the exercise, as Rose has described it, is narrow: demonstrate that a machine that exists now can solve at least one real-world problem far better than any conventional computer ever could. He began it in his last months at Sanctuary AI, from an idea he says had been with him for a decade, and has said he does not plan to commercialise it and wants to be its only employee forever. His departure from Sanctuary was reported in November 2024; the company cut staff shortly afterwards. Rose has taken the stage twice in this archive with the same talk — Super-intelligent Aliens Are Coming to Earth — first at TechVancouver in 2017 for Kindred, then at TechTO in 2023.
