About
Kevin Kim moved from Korea to Waterloo in grade six, got into civil engineering at the University of Waterloo, and left after three years because the clothing import business he was running on an early Shopify store was doing better than his marks. He sold it to Hong Kong-based YesStyle, then spent a decade in product — InVision, Checkout 51, and first product hire at Drop, which he watched grow from five people to 65. He took six months off and built Stadium Live around what he actually cared about: sports, gaming, fashion and music. The insight he described to TechTO was that the incumbents were chasing millennials with sports betting and nobody was building for the kids coming up, who watch highlights and streamers rather than full games. He has called the product "literally Club Penguin for sports." Fundraising began when a Maveron investor sent a Twitter DM in December 2019, before the company was incorporated.
Backers
Series A led by KB Partners and Union Square Ventures, with Kevin Durant's 35 Ventures, Origins Fund, Dapper Labs Ventures, Position Ventures, Valhalla Ventures, 6th Man Ventures, Alumni Ventures and Breakout Capital; Maple VC (Andre Charoo) backed it early

Quick answers
What is Stadium Live?
A mobile app where young sports fans build an avatar, collect items, chat and play sports-themed games. Kim describes it as a digital universe built on fandom, closer to Roblox or Club Penguin than to a scores app.
Who founded Stadium Live Studios?
Kevin Kim and Paul Xu, who had worked together at Drop. They started jamming on the idea in summer 2019 as a side project while both held full-time jobs.
How did Stadium Live raise its first round?
Kim posted weekly progress on Twitter without pitching anyone. An investor at Maveron sent a DM in December 2019 asking to talk — before the company was incorporated.
Why build for Gen Z rather than sports bettors?
Kim told TechTO the incumbents were all chasing millennials with betting products because that is where the deep pockets were, leaving nobody building for kids who follow highlights and streamers instead of whole games.
