About
The founding group was in graduate school and worked the business-plan competition circuit, with a stated aim of disrupting the status quo in sport with data — hockey specifically, which lagged the analytics wave that had already reached baseball and basketball. The company builds detailed play-by-play data and the analysis layer on top of it, and sells to teams and broadcasters. Co-founder Meghan Chayka used her 2017 TechWaterloo talk to make a point about who does that work: professional sport and technology share a representation problem, and the people in a founder or hiring role already hold the levers to change it. She was recruiting from the stage at the time, asking Waterloo Region technical people, women especially, to send in resumes — and put the company's headcount then at roughly 65 to 70 people.
