About

Techstars was founded in Boulder in 2006 by David Cohen, Brad Feld, David Brown and Jared Polis, and became one of the most-copied models in startup accelerators: a fixed-length, mentor-driven programme in exchange for a small equity stake. Its organising idea — that you give into a community without keeping score, and the returns come back indirectly — is what Feld calls 'give first', a phrase he first wrote as 'give before you get' in his 2012 book Startup Communities and later made the title of his 2025 book. Feld brought that argument to the TechTO Together stage during Toronto Tech Week in June 2025, in conversation with Golden Ventures' Matt Golden.

Quick answers

What is Techstars?

A startup accelerator founded in Boulder, Colorado in 2006. It runs mentor-driven programmes for early-stage companies in cities around the world, investing a small amount for a small equity stake.

Who founded Techstars?

David Cohen, Brad Feld, David Brown and Jared Polis, in 2006.

What is 'give first'?

Techstars' organising philosophy, and the title of Brad Feld's 2025 book. Feld defines it on the TechTO stage as a philosophy rather than a religion: you put into a system without expecting a specific return from a specific person, and take a long-term, positive-sum view.
