About

Kelly earned the nickname first: colleagues at Morgan Stanley used him as the in-house expert on frequent-flyer programs and credit-card optimisation, and in 2010 he put the advice on a blog. It became a business when he added affiliate links in 2011 and a New York Times interview followed. Bankrate acquired it in 2012 for a reported $28M, with Kelly keeping editorial control; Red Ventures bought Bankrate in 2017, making the site part of its consumer media portfolio. The model is affiliate: the site earns fees on credit-card referrals to issuers including Citi, Bank of America, Chase and Capital One, which is also why its independence gets scrutinised. It had 20 full-time staff and about 50 freelancers in 2017 and roughly 150 employees by 2025. Liza Landsman was appointed chief executive on 4 June 2025; Kelly, who published How to Win at Travel in 2025, stayed on as founder.

Backers

Not venture-backed. Owned by Red Ventures, which acquired Bankrate — the site's 2012 buyer — in 2017.
