About
Uber's Advanced Technologies Group was the company's self-driving division. In May 2017 it opened a research lab in Toronto — the first outside the United States — led by University of Toronto professor Raquel Urtasun, a machine-perception researcher, as ATG's chief scientist. Urtasun took the TechTO stage in 2020 to argue the case for building this kind of research in Toronto rather than moving it to the Bay Area. Uber sold ATG to Aurora Innovation in a transaction announced in December 2020 and completed in January 2021, valuing the unit at US$4 billion and giving Uber a stake in Aurora alongside a US$400-million investment. Aurora made offers to most ATG staff but not to the roughly 50-person Toronto R&D lab; Urtasun left and founded Waabi in 2021.
