About
Venue Live Technologies started as an answer to a specific complaint about remote work: the company all-hands run on generic video conferencing is a grid of muted faces, and nobody remembers it. Jason Goldlist — a co-founder of TechTO — and Frank Poon bootstrapped the product through about two years of private beta, went through Y Combinator's Winter 2022 batch, and raised a US$4M seed round led by Accel in August 2022, with the chief executives of Slack, Squarespace and Remote investing alongside. By then it had hosted more than five million minutes of meetings for Yelp, Shopify and PwC. The venue.live site still sells that product. The company has since changed direction: at TechTO's June 2024 hackathon, Venue's Marc Duez told the room the company "started a few years ago doing sort of commercial SaaS for video conferencing" and had "landed on the supernatural next step of helping tattoo artists book tattoos." He demoed an object-detection experiment that slices a photographed sheet of flash designs into individually bookable pieces so artists do not have to cut them up by hand. That product runs at venue.ink today.

Accel led a US$4M seed round announced in August 2022. Angels in the round included Stewart Butterfield of Slack, Anthony Casalena of Squarespace and Job van der Voort of Remote. The company went through Y Combinator's Winter 2022 batch and was bootstrapped before that.
