About
Voltera was founded in Waterloo in 2013 by Jesus Zozaya, Katarina Ilić, James Pickard and Alroy Almeida, four engineers who were tired of waiting weeks for prototype circuit boards to come back from overseas factories — often wrong. They started with an LED lit using conductive ink pushed through a hacked consumer inkjet, then spent years working through conductive ink chemistry that industry experts told them would not work. The V-One launched on Kickstarter in 2015 and became the first Canadian winner of the James Dyson Award. NOVA followed in 2022, aimed at flexible, stretchable and biocompatible substrates. Voltera designs, assembles and ships from Waterloo. Almeida was CEO until November 2022; co-founder Jesus Zozaya has led the company since.
Backers
Voltera launched the V-One on Kickstarter in 2015, and Almeida described it on stage in 2017 as one of the highest-funding Kickstarter campaigns to that point. Later venture backing is not confirmed from a primary source; aggregator profiles list BDC Capital among its investors, which we have not verified.
Quick answers
What does Voltera make?
Desktop machines for additive electronics. The V-One prints circuit boards with conductive ink, dispenses solder paste and reflows boards, so engineers can go from design to a working board in minutes. NOVA is a materials dispensing platform for flexible, stretchable and conformable electronics research.
Who runs Voltera now?
Co-founder Jesus Zozaya, who was CTO from the company's start in 2013 and became CEO in November 2022 after Voltera parted ways with Alroy Almeida. Zozaya is still named as CEO in Voltera's 2026 FLEXI Award announcement.
Where are Voltera printers made?
In Ontario. Almeida said on stage in 2017 that although the team spent time learning manufacturing in China, the majority of custom manufacturing was done in-house in Ontario and shipped directly to customers. Voltera's about page says products are designed, assembled and shipped from its Waterloo headquarters.
