About
Waterloop is a student design team at the University of Waterloo, formed to answer SpaceX's Hyperloop Pod Competition. A Hyperloop is a transport concept in which a pod levitates inside a near-vacuum tube and runs on electricity alone; the competition asked student teams to design and build working pods and race them on a mile-long test track in Hawthorne, California. Waterloop was the only Canadian team to reach the competition, and built prototypes it named Goose I and Goose II. The University reports the team grew from fewer than 20 students to roughly 150, spanning first-year undergraduates to master's students across many disciplines. Monty de Luna, a master's of architecture student who worked on the pod's shell and on the team's marketing, sponsorship and Kickstarter, took the TechWaterloo stage in February 2017 to make an argument for why a transportation project needs designers as well as engineers: if a pod is a windowless space a person sits inside at very high speed, how it feels is an engineering requirement rather than decoration.
