Who is Derrick Chow?
A co-founder of Marble, the Toronto health-data company that began as Medchart. Canadian Lawyer reported in May 2021 that Medchart was founded by James Bateman and Derrick Chow, then its CEO and COO. When checked in September 2026, Marble's about page listed him as COO and founder, and Medchart's listed him as COO and co-founder.
How did Medchart start?
TechCrunch reported in April 2021 that the company grew out of the personal experience of both co-founders, who had struggled to get and transfer health records for relatives during healthcare crises. In a December 2022 interview with The Edge, Bateman said he and Chow got their start at the Entrepreneurship Hatchery, the University of Toronto's incubator program.
What did Derrick Chow study?
U of T Engineering News profiled MedChart in February 2016 among three health-focused student startups, listing Chow as EngSci 1T3 and AeroE MASc 1T6: an Engineering Science degree (class of 2013) and a master's in aerospace engineering (class of 2016). The Globe and Mail described him in 2019 as a fellow engineering student of Bateman's.
When was the company founded?
Sources differ. The Globe and Mail (April 2019) and BetaKit (September 2021) both say 2015, and BetaKit named Bateman as CEO and Chow as COO. University of Toronto News wrote in August 2017 that Bateman had launched MedChart with Chow 'last year', and The Edge (December 2022) gave 2016.
