In their words
I want to talk about pivoting. From what Alex described in my past, I think I'm a bit of an expert pivoter — going from carpentry to quantum to health tech.
Pushing a snowball uphill versus chasing it downhill. When you're looking for product market fit, you're running a lot of experiments. There's a bunch of KPIs that you can do to quantify it, but at the end of the day they always say trust your gut.
Both in the US and Canada there are federal and Supreme Court rulings which say that you, as an individual, are actually the owner of the health information. The health care provider, the hospital — they all just own the medium that information is on.

Quick answers
What is James Bateman known for?
Co-founding Medchart with Derrick Chow at the University of Toronto and building it into Marble, a platform that retrieves patient-authorized health records for legal, insurance and research customers. The company raised $17 million across seed and Series A rounds led by Crosslink Capital and Golden Ventures.
What did James Bateman do before Medchart?
He was a licensed carpenter and framed houses for nine years, working alongside his father, then went back to school for physics at the University of Toronto and spent time at the Institute for Quantum Computing. He told the TechTO audience in 2018 that he considers himself an expert pivoter: carpentry to quantum to health tech.
Why did James Bateman start Medchart?
His father-in-law was dying of cancer in 2013 and his mother-in-law was left coordinating care across four hospitals, home care agencies and a GP, carrying paper records between appointments. His co-founder Derrick Chow was going through something similar with his own family.
Is Medchart the same company as Marble?
Yes. Bateman co-founded it as Medchart; it was renamed Marble in 2022, with Medchart continuing as the brand for records retrieval. Both sites are live and both list Bateman as CEO and co-founder. His TechTO talks all predate the rename, which is why the talk titles say MedChart.
