Who is Luke Burden?
Co-founder and tech director of Poparide, the Canadian carpooling platform. He is an Australian software engineer who studied computer science at the University of Sydney and partnered with Flo Devellennes in 2014 to grow the service across Canada.
What did he demo on the TechTO stage?
At TechVancouver in July 2017 he walked through the platform live — profiles, trust signals, posting a real Vancouver-to-Squamish trip he was about to drive — and said Poparide had 50,000 sign-ups, mostly in BC and Alberta, with Quebec pre-launched and Ontario not yet open.
Why is Poparide's pricing capped?
Because the platform is cost-sharing, not income. Burden explained in July 2017 that drivers set their own price but Poparide caps it, so the fare stays inside BC carpooling legislation limiting a driver to the maintenance and running costs of the vehicle.
