What is Marijana Zubrinic known for?
Inventing HALO, a human-attended remote monitoring system for hospital patients, while working as a nurse practitioner in thoracic surgery at UHN. She co-founded HALO Telemonitoring to commercialize it and is its COO and Chief Nursing Officer.
What problem does HALO solve?
Lung-transplant patients on high-flow oxygen can go into respiratory arrest within seconds if the mask slips. Traditional alarms missed it and one-to-one sitters were expensive and intrusive. HALO puts a mobile camera-and-speaker unit in the room and a technician watching remotely.
How did HALO start?
As a quality-improvement project at UHN in 2015, not a company. Zubrinic told the TechTO stage that hospitals started asking for it after she presented at conferences, which is when she and her co-founders looked at building a business around it.
