I think that the North American economy is literally at war with itself. On one side you have the income statement economy — companies still trying to make money. On the other you have the balance sheet economy.
You can buy advertising with engagement. You can't buy bread with engagement. You can't go to the grocery store and say, here's some engagement, I would like some bread.
We believe that we live in an age of authenticity, but we actually don't live in an age of authenticity, and we're confused.

What was his caution about influencer marketing?
That it trades on authenticity while the same culture keeps everything that is not authentic — cosmetic surgery, curated vacation feeds, staged wealth. He frames the buyer's question as what the spend earns, not what engagement it produces.
What is The Ivey Academy?
The executive education arm of Ivey Business School at Western University, with campuses in London and Toronto. Healy was its Executive Director when he spoke at TechTO in 2020; he now runs his own consultancy.
