How do you inject some of the humanity back into that? How do you engineer serendipity back into this space?
Google can tell you with 75% accuracy whether or not there's a dog in a video. It can also tell you whether it's a golden retriever or a basset hound. But so can my two-year-old neighbour — and what my two-year-old neighbour can say is whether that's a funny video, a scary video, a video they actually want to watch the next one from.
No fake news. It's all been human edited, it's all curated by people. We use algorithms to help us funnel the internet, but everything's been watched by a human.

Who is Tessa Sproule?
A co-founder of Vubble, the Toronto media technology company she started in 2014 after nearly twenty years at CBC. She is now director of metadata and information management at CBC/Radio-Canada.
Why did she leave CBC to start Vubble?
She told the MarketingTO stage she left in 2014 worried about a coming problem in digital media: content arriving without context, with no human judgment between the audience and the algorithm.
What does Vubble do?
It curates video feeds with human editors working alongside machine learning, and applies the same mix to content assessment and misinformation work. It has been supported by the Canada Media Fund.
