About
Alberta Innovates is a provincial corporation that supports Alberta's innovation system across the whole path from discovery to commercial use: research funding, applied testing and validation, and help getting technology to market. It works with entrepreneurs, established businesses and academic researchers, and is the organizer of Inventures, the province's flagship gathering of founders, investors, industry and global researchers — an event PwC estimated catalyzed roughly $200 million in potential deal flow in 2019. Laura Kilcrease, a venture capitalist who had earlier helped Austin, Texas diversify its economy away from oil and gas, was appointed to lead the consolidated agency and launched Inventures during her tenure. She joined TechTO's Founders & Funding podcast in May 2024 to preview that year's Inventures and to make the case for what the Alberta ecosystem offers founders from elsewhere in the country. Kilcrease left the CEO role in December 2024.
Backers
A provincial corporation of the Government of Alberta, publicly funded rather than investor-backed.
