About
Aviva Canada writes home, automobile, lifestyle and business insurance for 2.5 million customers and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aviva plc in the UK. Its Canadian lineage is long and heavily merged: the company's own history traces back to the 1835 incorporation of Canada Accident Assurance Company and the 1906 incorporation of The General Accident Assurance Company of Canada, with the modern entity formed by merger in 1999 and CGU Insurance Company of Canada renamed Aviva Insurance Company of Canada on 5 May 2003. What brought it to the TechTO stage was Safe & Connected, a two-cohort pilot accelerator it ran with Highline Beta for startups working on road and city safety. Paul Fletcher, then senior vice president of marketing and now chief corporate affairs officer, told the April 2022 demo day that the programme started from a number the insurer sees the aftermath of every day — around 150,000 people injured on Canadian roads each year — and from a judgement that faster data analysis and computer vision had made the problem newly tractable. He described what Aviva contributed as access rather than money: claims data on auto collisions, opened up and explained by the company's own data leader; a senior commercial fleet underwriter making introductions for a weather-and-transportation startup; and internal sessions on pitching media. The insurer has set a target of net zero as a company by 2040 and within its own operations by 2030.

Quick answers
What is Aviva Canada?
A property and casualty insurer selling home, auto, lifestyle and business cover to 2.5 million Canadian customers, headquartered in Markham, Ontario. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aviva plc, the London-listed insurance group.
How old is Aviva Canada?
The Aviva name in Canada dates to 5 May 2003, when CGU Insurance Company of Canada was renamed. The entity behind it was formed by merger in 1999, and the company's own history traces its Canadian lineage to Canada Accident Assurance Company, incorporated in 1835.
What was the Safe & Connected accelerator?
A two-cohort pilot accelerator Aviva Canada ran with Highline Beta for startups working on road safety and connected cities. Its April 2022 demo day was hosted by TechTO; cohort projects included reducing distracted driving in vehicle fleets, studying near-misses at junctions, and weather's effect on transportation.
What did Aviva actually give the startups?
Access more than cash, in Fletcher's account: anonymised auto-collision claims data with the company's own data leader explaining how it was structured and where its pitfalls were, a senior commercial fleet underwriter opening his sector network for a weather startup, and internal coaching on pitching to media.
