BLG is a national Canadian law firm that dates its lineage to 1823 and today practises from five cities — Calgary, Montréal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver — across corporate transactions, disputes, tax, employment and intellectual property, with patent and trademark agents in-house. In January 2022 the firm's IP lawyers ran a 48-minute TechTO session on IP strategy for founders planning an exit, built around one question: will this increase the valuation of my company when I exit? The session drew on BLG's Beyond IP Strategy programme and covered the economics of IP, common errors in IP management, pitfalls to avoid and alternatives to linear patent filing. Brandon Evenson, a partner in the Toronto office and a patent and trademark agent with a computer and software engineering background, was among the panel.
