About
Bereskin & Parr is an intellectual property law firm established in Toronto in 1965 and now working out of several Canadian offices. It practises IP exclusively — patent and trademark prosecution, copyright, industrial design, licensing and transactions, IP litigation, and advertising and regulatory work — rather than offering IP as one department of a full-service firm. Partner Paul Horbal took the FintechTO stage in January 2018 to argue that founders systematically undervalue their own IP, using the acquisitions of the period to make the point: JPMorgan buying WePay, PayPal buying iZettle, and closest to home, TD Bank acquiring Toronto's Layer 6 — a company with 17 employees, about a year old, at a rumoured $100 million. He also walked the room through the blockchain patent filings made since 2010, which went from a handful to close to 200 in 2014 and roughly double that the following year. Horbal has since moved to Marks & Clerk.
