About
Coinbase filed its pre-registration undertaking with Canadian regulators in March 2023 and formally launched in Canada that August, hiring former Shopify executive Lucas Matheson to run the country operation. In April 2024 it became the first international cryptocurrency exchange registered as a Restricted Dealer in Canada, which Matheson said followed almost three years of work in the country and roughly twelve months of it specifically with the Ontario Securities Commission. He took the TechTO stage in September 2024 to introduce The System Update and to argue for what Coinbase describes as a re-invigoration of the financial landscape for Canadians. This page covers Coinbase because of that Canadian arm and that talk; the global company is far larger than what is described here.
Backers
A public company, listed on Nasdaq since its April 2021 direct listing. Its earlier venture backers are no longer the relevant ownership story.
