About
Communitech has been the institutional centre of Waterloo Region's tech community since 1997 — a membership organisation that runs programs, space and talent and government initiatives for founders in Kitchener-Waterloo, and the organisation most closely associated with the region's identity as a startup cluster outside Toronto. Its home is the Communitech Hub on Charles Street in Kitchener. The organisation went through a difficult stretch in the mid-2020s, including layoffs, before appointing Sheldon McCormick as chief executive effective 14 April 2025 after a search run with Korn Ferry; McCormick came from the proptech company Properly and, before that, Uber Canada.
