Docker

Docker is the Palo Alto company behind the container tooling developers use to build, share and run software. It began as the Paris PaaS startup dotCloud and took the Docker name in 2013. Its own company page claims more than 20 million developers, and in December 2023 it bought AtomicJar, maker of Testcontainers.

About

Docker packages an application and everything it needs to run into a container that behaves the same on a laptop, a build server and in production. That idea is now ordinary; Docker is the company that made it ordinary. It sells the developer tooling around it — Docker Desktop, the Docker Hub registry, and the paid tiers on top — and describes its current focus as "defining how AI applications and agents are built, run, and governed securely."

The company started life as dotCloud, a platform-as-a-service business, and renamed itself Docker in 2013 after the container project it had open-sourced overtook the original product. It is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, and Don Johnson is chief executive.

On 11 December 2023 Docker announced its acquisition of AtomicJar, the company behind the open-source Testcontainers framework, which spins up throwaway containers for integration tests. It was Docker's seventh acquisition since 2019. AtomicJar's co-founder Eli Aleyner told a TechTO fireside in September 2024 what the acquisition looked like from the other side.

Backers

Privately held and venture-backed. Docker's own company page lists board members from Benchmark, Insight Partners and Bain Capital Ventures alongside CEO Don Johnson; the firms themselves are not named as investors on that page.

The company began as dotCloud, a Paris-founded platform-as-a-service startup, and renamed itself Docker in 2013 after the container project it had open-sourced eclipsed the original business. It is based in Palo Alto, California.

Why does Docker appear in this directory?

Eli Aleyner co-founded AtomicJar, the company behind Testcontainers, which Docker acquired in December 2023. He spoke at a TechTO fireside in September 2024 about what going through that acquisition taught him.
