Geotab

Geotab is an Oakville, Ontario telematics company founded in 2000 that connects commercial vehicles and equipment to a fleet-management platform. It was bootstrapped with no outside investors, is owned entirely by people who work there, and now reports roughly six million connected vehicles and assets across more than 100,000 customers.

About

Geotab builds the hardware and software that put commercial fleets online: a device in the vehicle, the MyGeotab platform on top of it, and an open API that lets other companies build and sell alongside it. Neil Cawse started it in 2000 out of a basement in Oakville after immigrating from South Africa with his brothers, and it has never taken outside financing β€” a decision he told TechTO in 2021 kept growth slow early but left the culture and the shareholder base intact, with every owner an employee. The company optimised for profit per person rather than headcount for years, outsourcing sales, marketing, manufacturing and office space to stay focused on the software. That constraint produced its strongest asset: a partner ecosystem β€” about 500 partners as of 2021, reselling, integrating and consulting on top of the platform, with competitors allowed on the Geotab Marketplace. Sustainability has been a through-line, sharpened by the 2018 acquisition of Waterloo's FleetCarma, whose EV telematics let Geotab tell a fleet which specific vehicles to electrify first. Geotab today describes itself as a global leader in connected operations, video telematics and AI-powered insights, with more than 2,700 employees and roughly six million connected vehicles and assets.

Backers

None. Geotab was bootstrapped and has never taken outside financing; Cawse told TechTO in 2021 that he owned about 70%, his two brothers 9% each, and roughly 150 to 200 other employee shareholders held the rest.

Quick answers

What does Geotab do?

It connects commercial vehicles and equipment to a fleet-management platform. A device in the vehicle reports location, engine and driver data; MyGeotab turns that into routing, safety, maintenance and emissions reporting; and an open marketplace lets other companies build on top.

Who owns Geotab?

The people who work there. Geotab took no outside financing, so there is no venture or private-equity ownership. On the TechTO stage in June 2021 Cawse put his own stake at about 70%, with his two brothers at 9% each and 150 to 200 employee shareholders.

Why did Geotab open its platform to competitors?

Because the ecosystem is the product. Cawse said the company deliberately gave up sales and marketing margin early so partners could make money on top of the platform, and that even competitors appear on the Geotab Marketplace β€” the price of running a genuinely open API.

What is Geotab's connection to electric fleets?

It acquired FleetCarma of Waterloo, Ontario, an EV telematics specialist Cawse described as roughly 40 people and world-leading in the category, and folded the technology in so fleets can be told which of their vehicles are the right ones to electrify first.
