Go Downtown tried to show you what was happening in a city right now. The app aggregated live events — festivals, shows, food trucks, happy hours — from user reports and other sources onto a map, then walked you there; alongside that it aggregated the location and speed of its own users into a real-time foot-traffic heatmap, which you could filter by demographic to find where a particular crowd was. Its founder called it a Waze for pedestrians. Yaron Bazaz, who moved to Vancouver from Israel and had earlier founded CrowdFanatic, brought the app to the TechVancouver stage as a demo in August 2016, while it was still in beta; the company ran a pilot at the University of British Columbia earlier that year that mapped the main walking routes hundreds of students were using across campus, and opened a free public pilot across Metro Vancouver that December. The consumer app is gone. Bazaz went on to lead Downtown.AI, a Vancouver company forecasting human movement for transit agencies, insurers and city planners; that too has wound down, and downtown.ai now serves a page advertising the domain for sale.

Why is the talk called 'Downtown' and not 'Go Downtown'?
TechVancouver's archive titled the August 2016 demo after the app as Bazaz introduced it in beta. By its public launch that December the company was calling itself Go Downtown, which is the name used here.
