About
Nic Beique described two companies to TechTO in December 2022. Helcim 1.0 was a small Alberta business reselling merchant services — door to door, phone calls, roughly 40 employees and 6,000 customers over a decade — where, in his words, you are not really in control of how you deliver the service. Helcim 2.0 was the attempt to become the payments company rather than the broker: convincing a banking partner to hand over the keys, then three years of building an in-house stack for payments, reconciliation and fraud, funded by squeezing dollars out of the bootstrapped original. The company sells on transparent published pricing with no contracts, and raised a $27M Series B in 2024.

Quick answers
What does Helcim do?
It processes credit and debit card payments for small and medium businesses across Canada and the United States, on payment, reconciliation and fraud infrastructure it built itself rather than resold.
Who founded Helcim and when?
Nicolas Beique, a self-taught programmer, started it in Calgary; the company's own about page describes it as "Bootstrapped since 2008."
How did Helcim become a processor?
Beique told TechTO it took years to convince a banking partner to "give us the keys to the kingdom," then three more years of building the stack in-house, paid for out of the original reseller business.
Is Helcim venture-backed?
Only recently. It bootstrapped for more than a decade before taking outside money; Information Venture Partners invested, and Helcim raised a $27M Series B in 2024.
