In their words
We were reselling merchant services, so you're not really in control of how you deliver the service.
It took a number of years to convince a banking partner to give us the keys to the kingdom and be able to do it ourselves. It took us actually three years behind the scenes to build it all.

Quick answers
What is Nic Beique known for?
Founding Helcim, a Calgary company that processes card payments for small and medium businesses in Canada and the US on infrastructure it built itself, and bootstrapping it for more than a decade before raising outside capital.
What is the difference between Helcim 1.0 and 2.0?
Beique's own framing on the TechTO stage. Helcim 1.0 resold other companies' merchant services — about 40 employees and 6,000 customers over a decade — while 2.0 is the payments company itself, built on an in-house stack for payments, reconciliation and fraud.
How was the rebuild funded?
Out of the original business. He told TechTO the team squeezed every dollar it could from the bootstrapped reseller to hire developers during the three years of building.
