About
Ideogram was founded in 2022 by Mohammad Norouzi, Jonathan Ho, William Chan and Chitwan Saharia, four researchers who had worked together on Imagen, Google's text-to-image system. Norouzi spent seven years at Google, part of it in Geoffrey Hinton's group in Toronto, and told a TechTO fireside in July 2024 that the team saw the potential of diffusion models early — Ho wrote the first diffusion paper while at UC Berkeley — but that turning the research into a product was hard to do inside a large company. The company describes itself as a visual communication platform rather than an image generator: users write a prompt and get images back, with the models trained in-house. Ideogram announced a US$16.5-million seed in August 2023, then an US$80-million Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz in February 2024, alongside the release of Ideogram 1.0. On stage in Toronto, Norouzi opened by saying the company had not yet built a successful business and was not profitable, and asked the audience to weigh his advice accordingly.
Backers
Andreessen Horowitz led the US$80-million Series A, with Index Ventures returning and Redpoint Ventures, Pear VC and SV Angel participating. Index Ventures backed the earlier US$16.5-million seed.
