About
Most irrigation on working farms is still opened and closed by hand and recorded on paper, which means a grower rarely knows how much water a given block actually received. Lumo replaces the manual valve with a connected one that controls and measures flow, and pairs it with an operations centre where a grower can schedule, monitor and audit water use across blocks, plus automation for pumps. The origin is unusually direct: Devon Wright bought a groundwater-fed property in a small Northern California farming community in 2017, planted an orchard, and ran his well dry within a year by over-irrigating. Looking for tools to automate and track water use, he found the category had none of the instrumentation that had reached thermostats, doorbells and home security, and that most of his neighbours were still irrigating and logging by hand. Wright had previously co-founded the Toronto Wi-Fi analytics company Turnstyle Solutions, which Yelp acquired in 2017.
