About
MadLipz was built in Toronto in 2016 by Amir Alikhanzadeh, Amirali Afshar and Shahed Doroudi, who met at the University of Toronto. The idea came from watching how popular Persian-dubbed clips were on YouTube: people were already re-voicing familiar scenes for laughs, using editing tools that made it slow. MadLipz reduced it to a few taps — pick a clip, record over it, share — with each 'lip' capped at fifteen seconds. Much of its growth came from users dubbing the same source clips into jokes that only land in their own language. The team demoed the app on the TechTO stage in May 2016 as Demo of the Month, and later went through Techstars Toronto, raising $671,000 CAD.
