About
Novo Nordisk Canada is the Canadian affiliate of Novo Nordisk A/S, based in Mississauga, Ontario. The parent traces to 1923, when Nordisk Insulinlaboratorium was set up in Denmark to make insulin commercially; Novo and Nordisk competed until merging in 1989. In Canada the affiliate's obesity work began with Health Canada's February 2015 approval of Saxenda — liraglutide — as the first once-daily human GLP-1 analogue indicated for chronic weight management. Kate Hanna, then in communications there, spoke at TechTO's marketing event in September 2019 about a specific constraint on that work: Canadian pharmaceutical marketing rules had only weeks earlier begun to acknowledge social media in draft guidance, and she is not permitted by law to name a product and its indication in the same message.
