About
OntarioMD sits between two large institutions — it is a for-profit corporation wholly owned by the Ontario Medical Association, funded by the province through Ontario Health — and its job is to get digital tools into community practices that sit outside hospitals. It was formed in 2004 to take over the management of the ePhysician Project, which the Ministry of Health and the OMA had created in October 2001. It certifies EMR products against provincial specifications and runs adoption programs, peer-leader mentoring and services including Health Report Manager, eConsult, eReferral and OLIS. A 2016 submission to eHealth Ontario recorded 13,700 Ontario physicians using an OntarioMD-certified EMR and more than 10 million Ontarians covered by an EMR through their primary care physician. At HealthTO in February 2019, chief medical officer Dr. Darren Larsen described the organisation to a startup audience in blunter terms: a company with 16,000 doctors and nurse practitioners in its reach, and, in his telling, the child of two dysfunctional parents — the Ministry that funds it and the association that owns it — whose survival skill is making both sides look good.
