About
Qui Identity set out to change how identity works online: rather than each service holding a copy of your documents, the person holds the credential and decides what to share. It was founded by Kirk Simpson, who co-founded Wave and ran it until H&R Block bought it for US$400-million in 2019, and Peter Carrescia, a former OMERS Ventures managing director who joined Wave as a senior vice-president. The company came out of stealth in August 2022 with $6.5-million CAD (about US$5-million) led by Round13 Digital Asset Fund, with OMERS Ventures and Wittington Ventures among the investors. It launched its first product, Confirm, in December 2023. Simpson and Carrescia now run Courtyard AI; Crunchbase carries Courtyard AI on the same organisation record as Qui Identity, which suggests a pivot rather than a wind-down, but neither founder has published a statement about what became of the Qui product. Simpson recorded a live Founder Journey episode with TechTO in September 2023 while at Qui, largely about what he learned building and selling Wave.

Quick answers
What was Qui Identity building?
Decentralised digital identity — technology that lets a person store their own identity credentials and control what they share with a service, instead of each service holding its own copy.
Who founded Qui Identity?
Kirk Simpson, co-founder and former CEO of Wave, and Peter Carrescia, formerly of OMERS Ventures and later a senior vice-president at Wave.
Is Qui Identity still operating?
Not as an active product, as far as the public record shows. Both founders now run Courtyard AI, and Crunchbase carries Courtyard AI on the same organisation record. Neither has published a statement about the Qui product, so this page does not claim it shut down.
