About
Recursion's premise is that drug discovery can be run as an industrial process: generate enormous volumes of standardised cell-imaging data, then use machine learning to find relationships no one went looking for. Its Canadian footprint arrived in 2023, when it agreed to acquire Cyclica — the Toronto company whose digital chemistry suite handled mechanism-of-action deconvolution and generative chemistry — for $40 million, alongside Montreal's Valence for $47.5 million; both teams were folded into Recursion. In November 2024 it completed a $688 million all-stock combination with the UK's Exscientia, bringing that company's AI platforms and immunology and oncology pipelines together with Recursion's dataset and its Nvidia-powered BioHive-2 supercomputer. Oren Kraus, its director of machine learning, presented Phenomic AI at TechTO in August 2018.
