Trainer+

Trainer+ is Toronto software for gyms and personal trainers: assess a client, prescribe a program, track what they actually do, and follow up automatically. Founded in 2015 by Nick Corneil, it aims to become an electronic fitness record — the fitness counterpart to a medical record — so trainers sit inside a patient's circle of care.

About

Trainer+ sells to gyms and trainers rather than to consumers, on the argument that the leverage sits with the professional: only about 2.4% of people work with a fitness professional, so the opportunity is making that professional cheaper and more accessible, not building another tracking app. The platform covers the first consult, every assessment and reassessment, the workout plan, and the data around it. Founder Nick Corneil has used TechTO's HealthTO stage twice to make the wider case — that a doctor needs to know how often someone got to the gym and what changed in their body composition, not how much they bench, and that fitness will only be funded as preventative care once those outcomes are tracked. Customers named on its site include Totum Lifescience, the YMCA of Peterborough and the Prescription to Get Active program; Ryerson University was an early licensee.

Quick answers

What does Trainer+ do?

It is a web and mobile platform gyms and trainers use to run the whole client relationship — the first assessment, the workout plan, progress tracking, and automated reassessment reminders. It sells to the professional, not to the person training.

Who founded Trainer+?

Nick Corneil, in 2015, in Toronto. He had been a personal trainer, a facility manager and Director of Operations for a chain of gyms before building software for the industry he came from.

What is an electronic fitness record?

Corneil's term, from the TechTO stage in 2016: extending the electronic health record one layer further, so a fitness plan and a trainer's results become part of a patient's record. His argument is that personal training only gets covered by health benefits once its outcomes can be measured.
