Twitter

Twitter was the San Francisco social network launched in 2006. Elon Musk bought it for US$44 billion in 2022 and renamed it X; in March 2025 he sold it to his own AI company, xAI, in an all-stock deal that valued X at US$33 billion. Paul Burns ran its Canadian office.

About

Twitter is the company Paul Burns represented on the TechTO stage in August 2020, when he was managing director of Twitter Canada and spent a conversation with Carat CEO Alex Panousis on what the pandemic year did to digital marketing. The company he spoke for no longer exists under that name. Elon Musk completed a US$44 billion purchase in October 2022, rebranded the service X the following year, and in March 2025 announced that xAI, his artificial-intelligence company, had acquired X in an all-stock deal valuing X at US$33 billion and xAI at US$80 billion. Burns left in 2023 and is now chief executive of SkipTheDishes in Winnipeg. This page exists because of the talk; it covers the company, not the Canadian office, which Twitter never broke out separately.

Backers

Publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange until Musk took it private in October 2022. Since March 2025 it has been owned by xAI.
