About

American shipyards are constrained less by demand than by the labour and process engineering a hull requires. Valstad's answer is to move the work into machines and software. Its modular robotic cells perform common shipbuilding operations autonomously — primary stiffening, micropanel and T-beam fabrication, material handling — in a smaller footprint than conventional shipyard automation. It is rebuilding the joining process around phased-array laser welding, which it says welds thick structural steel in a single pass with minimal distortion, runs five to six times faster than submerged-arc or MIG on long seams, and cuts consumables by up to 90 percent. A planning engine takes a 3D model and returns a complete build sequence — every cut, weld, robotic motion and inspection point — and replans when something changes, which is what makes short-run and repair work viable. Commercially it sells precision structural kits and production systems to shipyards and industrial partners rather than only building ships itself, and has said its first facility, a roughly $50 million plant, will serve the inland maritime industry. The $2.6 million pre-seed closed in 2025 with N49P, 10VC, Elementum and Northside Ventures.
