About

VetStrategy owns and supports veterinary practices rather than operating as a single clinic. Its stated purpose is "healthy animals, happy owners," and its pitch to the veterinarians whose practices it acquires is support and resources — so clinicians can, in its words, focus on practising quality medicine their way. It organises that around three promises: a people promise to be a good place to work, a customer promise of world-class veterinary care delivered locally, and a sustainability promise.

The company was founded in 2006. Most of its clinics were bought after 2013, when Imperial Capital invested through two of its funds. In August 2020, Boston-based Berkshire Partners acquired a 70 per cent majority interest at a reported $1.4 billion valuation, against pro forma 2020 revenue of $770 million. Between that deal and September 2021 the group added 110 locations, reaching 270 animal hospitals across nine provinces.

In September 2021 VetStrategy combined with the European veterinary group IVC Evidensia, in a deal whose price was not disclosed; Berkshire rolled its investment into an ownership stake in IVC and took a board seat. Orin Litman was chief executive at the time of that combination.

Backers

Berkshire Partners acquired a 70 per cent majority interest in August 2020 from Imperial Capital, then rolled that investment into an ownership stake in IVC Evidensia when the two combined in September 2021, taking a board seat.
