Walmart began operating in Canada in 1994, acquiring 122 Woolco stores, and now runs more than 400 locations with over 100,000 associates out of a Store Support Centre in Mississauga, Ontario. Two TechTO appearances bracket the retailer's digital push. In February 2019 Fareena Contractor presented a set of innovation resolutions for the year. In April 2020, weeks into the pandemic's disruption of Canadian retail, president and chief executive Horacio Barbeito joined TechTO Retail. That July, Walmart Canada announced a C$3.5-billion investment over five years covering more than 150 store renovations — over a third of the network — along with new distribution capacity and e-commerce infrastructure.
