About
Workday's own account of itself starts in 2005, when Aneel Bhusri and Dave Duffield founded it as, in the company's words, "the first true cloud application provider for HR and finance." Workday Human Capital Management launched in 2006 and Workday Financial Management in 2008; the company went public in 2012, passed 10,000 customers in 2023, and joined the Fortune 500 and S&P 500 in 2024.
The product line now covers HR, finance, planning, payroll, spend, legal contract intelligence and industry operations, with a platform layer — Workday Extend, integrations, Data Cloud and a marketplace — that lets customers build on top. Its recent positioning is agentic AI: Workday Illuminate launched in 2024, its first AI agents the same year, and the Workday Agent System of Record in 2025, described as a central place to manage a fleet of AI agents.
Workday has grown partly by acquisition — Cape Clear Software in 2008, Platfora in 2016, Adaptive Insights in 2018, Peakon and VNDLY in 2021 — and it was one of those deals that connects the company to TechTO's archive.
In the quarter ended 31 July 2026, Workday reported total revenues of $2.649 billion, up 12.8% year over year, of which $2.471 billion was subscription revenue, up 13.9%. Its own boilerplate says more than 11,500 organisations, including more than 65% of the Fortune 500, use it.
