In their words
My team essentially supports the infrastructure, so we support all the production systems. If something goes bump in the night, it's our team.
Everyone asks why AWS, and the first thing I put there is maturity. We experimented with a few other cloud providers — wasn't pretty.
You can't just take a thing and lift it and move it in the cloud. You do that, it'll cost you more, it doesn't work — you're retrofitting it.
Quick answers
Who is David Spencer?
An infrastructure leader at PointClickCare, the Mississauga long-term-care software company. A Rackspace Technology case study, checked 2026-09-20, identifies him as "David Spencer, Senior Director of Service Infrastructure, PointClickCare".
What did his team do?
Ran PointClickCare's production infrastructure. In his October 2017 talk he said his team supported all production systems, was up seven by twenty-four, and spent at least one weekend a month on maintenance.
Why did PointClickCare choose AWS?
Maturity and breadth of services under healthcare compliance constraints. The Rackspace Technology case study, checked 2026-09-20, quotes him: "We knew this wasn't going to be a lift and shift from on-prem to the cloud, and we needed a breadth of services with a focus on security and deployment, which is why we chose AWS." The same case study lists HIPAA compliance, Active Directory and DNS re-architecture, and a new CI/CD pipeline among the challenges.
Is he still at PointClickCare?
Not established. He does not appear on PointClickCare's executive team page, checked 2026-09-20, and no current source confirms a present-day role. The title here is the one he held at the time of the AWS migration.
