What is Elsie Amoako known for?
Founding Mommy Monitor, now Mino Care, a Toronto nonprofit providing culturally safe perinatal care to African, Caribbean, Black and racialized families. She also founded MinoFest, a reproductive and maternal health conference.
Why did she start it?
Her research covered why Black women face worse pregnancy complications in Canada. She told the TechTO audience the turning point was a friend, six months pregnant and high-risk with preeclampsia, whose obstetrician would not pick up the phone.
What did she tell the TechTO audience?
That she had been asked by investors whether Black women were a real market, and that the answer is simply yes — and that a startup should be judged on the change it leaves behind, not the exit.
