In their words
We're actually solving an important problem, which is that 80 percent of small business failure in America, at the very least, is due to cash flow mismanagement issues.
I'd spoken to a hundred small business owners across the continent before I even had a name for the company. And it's very awkward conversations — I didn't even know what I was building yet.
For most of them they think about a bank account like a socket in the wall. I don't care who my utility is, I get the electricity, I plug in, I need it to run my business.

Quick answers
What is NorthOne?
A small-business banking platform serving the American market — Bensoussan described it on the TechTO stage in July 2021 as "KOHO but for business." It provides checking, debit, remote cheque deposit and payments, with the stated aim of acting as the finance department a small business could not otherwise afford.
Is NorthOne still operating independently?
Unclear as of August 2026. northone.com now redirects to Relay Business Banking. NerdWallet noted the redirect in an editor's note dated 12 August 2026 and said Relay had not responded to its requests about the potential acquisition. No acquisition has been formally announced.
What did he do before founding NorthOne?
A JD/MBA at McGill, then roughly six years at McKinsey. He told TechTO he spent much of that time watching fintech emerge in Europe and trying to translate what it meant for large North American financial institutions — which is where the NorthOne idea started.
