NorthOne

NorthOne is a small-business banking platform for the American market, founded in Toronto in 2016 by Eytan Bensoussan and Justin Adler. It bundles a business chequing account with cash-flow tooling, on the thesis that most small businesses fail on financial administration rather than on their product. As of August 2026 northone.com redirects to Relay Business Banking.

About

Eytan Bensoussan and Justin Adler founded NorthOne to serve American small businesses that could never afford a finance department. Bensoussan, a McGill JD/MBA who spent about six years at McKinsey watching European fintech emerge, interviewed roughly a hundred small business owners across the continent before the company had a name — and told the TechTO stage in July 2021 that if money was not in a founder's top three worries, he thanked them and moved on. The product is an API-enabled, mobile-first business chequing account with a debit card, remote cheque deposit and cheque mailing, wires and cash handling, wrapped in tooling meant to automate the back-office work owners take on by default. Bensoussan described the Canadian analogue as "KOHO but for business," though NorthOne itself serves only the US. The company built a dedicated research function, and for a long stretch new hires interviewed a small business owner as part of onboarding.

Its current independence is unclear. northone.com now redirects to relayfi.com, the site of Relay, a Toronto small-business banking company. NerdWallet added an editor's note on 12 August 2026 recording the redirect and saying Relay had not responded to its requests about a potential acquisition. No acquisition has been announced by either company, so nothing here asserts one.

Quick answers

What does NorthOne do?

It provides US small businesses with a mobile-first business chequing account and the cash-flow tooling around it — debit card, remote cheque deposit, cheque mailing, wires and cash handling — positioned as the finance department a small business could not otherwise afford.

Is NorthOne still an independent company?

Unclear as of August 2026. northone.com redirects to Relay Business Banking, and NerdWallet's editor's note of 12 August 2026 records that Relay had not answered its questions about a potential acquisition. Neither company has announced a transaction, and this page does not claim one.

Who founded it?

Eytan Bensoussan and Justin Adler, in Toronto in 2016. Bensoussan is the CEO; he came from McKinsey after a JD/MBA at McGill, and built the company around interviews with about a hundred small business owners.
