About

Affirm, founded in 2012 by Max Levchin, lends at the point of sale so shoppers can pay for a purchase in instalments. Its route into Canada was PayBright, one of the country's first and largest buy-now-pay-later providers, which worked with more than 7,000 domestic and international retailers; Affirm announced the CAD $340 million cash-and-equity acquisition on 3 December 2020 and closed it in the first quarter of 2021. Wayne Pommen, who had grown PayBright from five people to roughly 250 and landed Apple, Hudson's Bay, Wayfair, Samsung and Sephora as clients, came across with the business and now runs global revenue as Affirm's chief revenue officer. He has used the TechTO stage since to argue that Canadian founders are too cautious for their own good, and to lay out why embedded finance became the main pillar of Affirm's small-business strategy.
