About
ATB Ventures was launched in 2020 as the research and development arm of ATB Financial, described by the bank as "a diverse team of entrepreneurs, inventors and data scientists who share a passion for technology." Its remit is to turn research into marketable products rather than to run the bank's day-to-day technology.
Two lines of work dominate. The first is digital identity: the Oliu enterprise platform, Oliu Studio and the Proof digital-credential wallet, built so organisations can verify who someone is without hoarding their data. The second is AI safety — the ATB Turing Box, a machine-learning framework for removing bias, which ATB Financial uses itself. The team also publishes foresight work, including Humans of 2030+, a model built from a survey of more than 500 Canadians, and makes strategic investments; it has backed the deep-tech fund Radical Ventures. Azim Esmail, who has a profile here, is head of growth and partnerships.
Backers
Wholly funded by ATB Financial, the Alberta Crown corporation it belongs to. It raises no outside capital; it deploys the bank's.
Quick answers
What is ATB Ventures?
The research and development arm of ATB Financial, launched in 2020. ATB's own release calls it "a diverse team of entrepreneurs, inventors and data scientists," set up to build, partner and invest in technology rather than to run the bank's internal IT.
What has it built?
Digital identity products — the Oliu platform, Oliu Studio and the Proof credential wallet — and the ATB Turing Box, a machine-learning framework for removing bias from AI that ATB Financial uses itself. It also publishes the Humans of 2030+ foresight model.
Does it invest?
Yes, strategically rather than as a standalone fund: it looks for investments, ventures and acquisitions that support ATB's strategy, and has made a strategic investment in the deep-tech firm Radical Ventures.
Why is an Alberta bank doing this?
The stated reason is to help Alberta foster innovation through advances in digital identity and unbiased AI. ATB Financial is an Alberta Crown corporation, so the work is aimed at the province's economy as well as the bank's own products.
